What will Fabian Ruiz give to the PSG squad ?

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

At the end of the transfer window, PSG signed, the 26-year-old Spanish International Fabian Ruiz Pena from Napoli for a term of 5 years. Experts are saying PSG has gone for some serious moves in this Summer transfer window and not for those fancy ones which they have often done in the past to challenge for the top European Competition, which they have only dreamt of since Nasser Al Khelaifi took over. In the competition, they came the closest to the title in 2020 when they lost to Bayern Munich in the final.

In the last season under Pochettino, they were not able to play a good brand of football and although they won the domestic league title because no other club came close to them in terms of squad value and quality, they got eliminated from the Champions League by current Champions Real Madrid in round of 16 even though Madrid has been going through a phase of re-bulding. Surely upfront PSG has got probably the best squad in terms of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar, but in the midfield, their new boss Christophe Galtier felt a need to sign a ball-carrying midfielder and someone who has got a good progressive passing capacity.

Fabian Ruiz perfectly suits this role and would be crucial in forming the link between PSG's defence and midfield. More his ability to provide key passes to his forward line will increase PSG’s overall goal-scoring potential, especially in European competitions against other title challenges. He is quite a threat in front of the goal as says his records till now. But more than a scorer he would be a key assist provider in PSG. But what about his defensive work rate? Except for interceptions his capability of putting pressure, tackling, etc. is not impressive and he has got a very poor record of winning aerial duels. Maybe not in Ligue 1 but in the Champions League which is PSG’s main aim this season could be in trouble again, because PSG would have to face the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester City. Champions League demands a high intensity football and it becomes very crucial for midfielders to drop down and defend.

Anyway, this is overall a good signing for PSG's front 3 as they can probably expect more supplies from the midfield and combining their quality, goal goal-scoring potential of PSG is only going to Increase.

Can PSG win the Champions League this season?
